Reflection
This semester at Lincoln Middle School has taught me so much. I was nervous going into Lincoln because I had heard from previous classes that Lincoln was a tough school to go to. After learning that, I was told I would be in a Language arts class rather than an art class. I knew that this experience would only be what I made of it. So I jumped right it and had a wonderful time while at Lincoln.
Some of my teaching strengths that I recognized while at Lincoln included connecting with students, facilitating a thorough lesson and staying on track. I found that many students trusted my very quickly. I had a few students in particular that explained problems and issues with me. I also think that I was able to facilitate a lesson well this semester. I felt like I was proud of the lesson plan I created and felt as if it was going to be a well thought out lesson that the students would enjoy. Based on their feedback after the lesson, they definitely enjoyed it. I also think that my time management and ability to stay on task this semester was successful. I am a person who plans everything out so to be able to stick to my lesson plan timing was an accomplishment. I had to be flexible though in some areas because certain area of the lesson took longer than expected and others were shorter.
Some of my teaching weaknesses would have to be disciple and taking care of students that are off task. I have worked with a wide variety of students and have seen many different behaviors. Although I did not have any issues this semester, I am still unsure how to treat these scenarios. I have been very fortunate to have such great students and have always taught with the philosophy in mind that just because a child does something wrong doesn’t mean that the child is bad, they just made a bad choice.
Lincoln Middle School has 2 weeks at the beginning of the school year that they call culture week. Culture week filled with class activities that build up the culture within the classroom and school in hopes that the culture with provide a stronger learning environment for the students. Lincoln was the first school that I have heard of that participates in culture week. I enjoy the idea of this but if this is not in place in my future school, I would love to do something similar to this in order to build relationships with my students and for students to build relationships with other students. As an art teacher, I also feel that it is important to bring in all types of art from all around the world so that students can have a better understanding of their peers’ cultures.
My current classroom management plan is a combination of high level student involvement, clear student expectations, little wasted time, and a relaxed work oriented environment. I see myself teaching in a classroom that the students can come to me without being nervous, they will be excited to come to class, students can talk with one-another about art and their weekend plans, and that students can reach their goals that they set in art and life.
In my next phase of teaching, I look forward to being more involved in the classroom and building strong relationships with my students.
